Thanking him for two packets and for information about a Mr. Macpherson; saying Mr. Laing is endeavoring to have a copy of the work for which he wrote a Preface bound up and sent to him; mentioning the Report of the Highland Society and the dispute over the authenticity of the Ossian poems; soliciting his opinion on the controversy; asking for his comments on his Life of Johnson, which is to be published that October; discussing in detail corrections for the new edition of Northern Antiquities; recounting a conversation with Dr. Leyman about the project.
